What is Effacement and dilation?

Effacement means that the cervix stretches and gets thinner. Dilatation means that the cervix opens. As labor nears, the cervix may start to thin or stretch (efface) and open (dilate). This prepares the cervix for the baby to pass through the birth canal (vagina).

Try a Birthing Ball: Rocking, bouncing, and rotating your hips on a birthing ball also opens the pelvis, and it may speed up cervical dilation. Walk Around: Don’t underestimate the power of gravity! When walking, your baby will press against the cervix, which might help it efface and dilate.

How are Effacement and dilation measured?

Measuring effacement Effacement is measured in percentages ranging from 0 to 100 percent. You’re considered 0 percent effaced if your cervix is longer than 2 centimeters, around the length of the neck of a standard wine bottle. When you’re 50 percent effaced, the cervix is around the length of the neck of a Mason jar.

What causes Effacement and dilation?

As the baby’s head drops down into the pelvis, it pushes against the cervix. This causes the cervix to relax and thin out, or efface. During pregnancy, your cervix has been closed and protected by a plug of mucus. When the cervix effaces, the mucus plug comes loose and passes out of the vagina.
