Is GelRed hazardous?
Is GelRed hazardous?
Gel Red is an innovative, stable, non-hazardous, and environmentally safe fluorescent nucleic acid dye designed by Biotium as an alternative to toxic ethidium bromide (EtBr) for staining dsDNA, ssDNA and RNA in agarose gels and polyacrylamide gels.
Is GelRed cytotoxic?
GelRed® and GelGreen® are a new generation of nucleic acid gel stains. In the AMES test, GelRed® and GelGreen® are noncytotoxic and nonmutagenic at concentrations well above the working concentrations used in gel staining.
What is GelRed made of?
GelRed is an intercalating nucleic acid stain used in molecular genetics for agarose gel DNA electrophoresis. GelRed structurally consists of two ethidium subunits that are bridged by a linear oxygenated spacer.
Is GelRed carcinogenic?
GelRedTM is a highly sensitive fluorescent nucleic acid dye that works when excited by a transilluminator. It was designed to replace EtBr, which is considered to be carcinogenic and mutagenic. GelRedTM is also known to be very sensitive without requiring a destaining step.
Is gel stain flammable?
Gel stains are quite flammable and the cloths may pose a fire hazard.
What is GelRed used for?
GelRed® is a sensitive, stable and environmentally safe fluorescent nucleic acid dye designed to replace the highly toxic ethidium bromide (EtBr) for staining dsDNA, ssDNA or RNA in agarose gels or polyacrylamide gels. GelRed® has been shown to bind DNA exclusively by intercalation (1).
How do you make 3 agarose?
3% gel = 50 mL 1x TBE buffer and 1.5 g agarose powder.
How are GelRed and GelGreen safe for humans?
To make GelRed® and GelGreen® safe, scientists at Biotium used a novel yet very simple concept: reduce genotoxicity by preventing the dyes from entering living cells. We believe that a DNA-binding dye can be made nonmutagenic or substantially so by denying its chance to be in contact with genomic DNA in living cells.
Is it safe to dispose of GelRed gel stain?
A series of safety tests have confirmed that GelRed® is noncytotoxic, nonmutagenic and nonhazardous at concentrations well above the working concentrations used in gel staining. As a result, working strength GelRed® can be safely disposed of down the drain or in regular trash, providing convenience and reducing cost in waste disposal.
Which is more sensitive GelRed or GelGreen stain?
GelRed™ and GelGreen™ are highly sensitive either as precast gel stains or post gel stains. GelRed™ is much more sensitive than EtBr, and at least as sensitive as or brighter than SYBR Gold in post gel staining. Unlike SYBR Gold, GelRed™ can also be used as a highly sensitive precast gel stain.
How is GelRed used to stain agarose gels?
GelRed® is an ultra sensitive, extremely stable and environmentally safe fluorescent nucleic acid dye designed to replace the highly toxic ethidium bromide (EtBr) for staining dsDNA, ssDNA or RNA in agarose gels or polyacrylamide gels. Compatible with downstream gel purification, restriction digest, sequencing, and cloning
